A Report On Waste Water TreatmentMost times when you flush the toilet you don’t think about where it goes. We are going to talk about what happens when you do flush your toilet. Eventually, all water from your houses and businesses goes to the ocean. What you want to go into the ocean is clean water not contaminated or untreated water. In some undeveloped countries sewage flows freely in gutters and ditches and leaks into the ocean untreated and therefore contaminating the bays and ocean. Once it gets into the ocean it can contaminate the sea life and destroy rivers and beaches. We are going to be focusing on our town of Franklin, MA, which is one of thirty five towns that are part of the Charles River Watershed. Franklin has both a sewer system and zones with septic systems. Both eventually end up in the Charles River Wastewater Treatment Facility in Medway, MA. Clean water comes into our houses through pipes and ends up in our showers, washing machines, sinks, dishwashers, tubs, and toilets. The dirty water from these appliances is pumped back out into a different set of pipes that transport it to the Treatment Plant in Medway. Some people who have septic systems have trucks from the treatment plant come and siphon away the sludge in their tanks and transport it to the Treatment Plant facility. The Treatment Plant then separates the sludge from the liquids and begins the process of cleaning it. The sludge then gets incinerated and the leftover liquids get processed through aeration, adding good bacteria and then cleaning the liquids by chlorine. After all of these processes the clean liquids then get put into the Charles River. Then begins the journey into the Atlantic Ocean. Then the Charles Rivers carries the effluent along its path ultimately to the ocean. One of the benefits of this clean water being put into the Charles River is it helps clean up the river upstream. Another benefit is that we are trying to clean up the ocean and not pollute it more. This can benefit the fish and wildlife that depend on the ocean and clean water and reduces beach based diseases which include hepatitis, cholera, typhoid fever, stomach and intestinal diseases. It also helps reduce Red Tide. All in all if properly treated effluent can benefit the ecosystem of the Charles River and the ocean. Excess pollution/sewage leads to excess nitrogen and phosphorous in the water. These in turn over feed plants and algae which eventually choke a water system, die and then the decomposers come in and remove oxygen. This eventually will eliminate fish and wildlife in the water system. First Lego League Mission

The TeamThis report was organized by Team Stealth of the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School as part of the 2005 FIRST Lego League project for Ocean Odyssey 2005. There are ten members in Team Stealth. We went on a field trip to The Charles River Pollution Control District Wastewater Treatment Facility in Medway in Oct. 2005.Control Panel
