A Letter to Parents from Whitsons

Students attending the Franklin Public Schools may purchase food in one of three ways:

1) Using Cash.

2) Pre-paying via check. Please make a check payable to the "Franklin School Lunch Program," for whatever amount you chose, and send it in to school with your child. PLEASE PUT YOUR CHILD'S FULL NAME IN THE MEMO LINE ON THE CHECK.

3) Pre-pay online using a credit card or PayPal. Please click to the left for details on this convenient way to pay via MyNutriKids.com. MyNutriKids.com allows you to see your child's current balance, view a list of their lunch transactions for the previous 30 days, and even activate a "low balance alert" system that will send you an email every time your child's balance drops below a pre-determined level you choose! (Please note, low balance alert emails are not automatic unless you request them in your MyNutrikids.com profile.)

In order to set up an account for your child(ren) you must know his/her ID number. This is same 7-digit number that the students use to log in to the school's computer system. It is assigned to them when they enroll in the Franklin Public schools, and remains the same from Kindergarten through 12th grade. If you do not know your child's ID number, you can get it by calling your school's secretary, or call the Food Service Office at 508-613-1732 from 8 am till 2 pm on school days. FHS students' ID number is on their student ID, next to the barcode.

(MyNutrikids.com charges a $1.75 fee each time you deposit money onto your child's account. This $1.75 fee is the same regardless of the amount you enter, and whether you are adding money to one account or multiple accounts. It is collected by Nutrikids to cover the credit card fees associated with a purchase.)

Frequently Asked Questions:

* What happens to my student's balance at the end of the year?

If your student has a prepaid account, their balance at the end of the year will carry over to the following school year. Their balance will stay with them even if they change schools within the Franklin district. If you will be moving your child out of the Franklin Public Schools, or if your child is in 12th grade, please be aware that we cannot give refunds of unused balances. If your child has a remaining balance and will be leaving the Franklin Schools, you (the parent) can request that we transfer the remaining balance to another student - for example, we could transfer a remaining balance of a graduating senior to a younger sibling or friend. However, we cannot refund the money to you. (Requests for transfers from Seniors' accounts should be made prior to the end of the school year when the student graduates. Also, Tri-County Regional VTHS and the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter School are not part of the Franklin Public Schools.)

* I'm looking at my child's transaction history online. What is a "non-reim lunch"?

When viewing your child's transaction history on the Mynutrikids.com website, the term "non-reim lunch" refers to a second lunch your child has purchased on the same day. Many students purchase "double lunch." The second of the two lunches is shown as a non-reimbursable (non-reim) lunch, because we have to account for it differently when reporting to the state the number of student lunches we have sold each day.

* Can I set up an online account to view my child's transactions even if I don't prepay online?

Yes! You can set up the account, and still pay daily in cash or send in a check. This allows you to view your child's purchases without paying the $1.75 fee for online payments. However, many parents find it much easier to pre-pay online and avoid the possiblities of checks or cash being lost on the way to school or disappearing in the bottom of a child's backpack.

* I have several children in the Franklin schools. Can I send in one check to pay for all of them?

You may send in one check to pay for multiple children in the SAME school. In the memo line of the check, list each child's name and the amount to be put on each child's account. (Example - $50 check, write: Emily Jones $30, Billy Jones $20). If your children attend different schools you will need to send a separate check to each school. Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan are separate schools, as are Horace Mann and Oak St, and Jefferson and Remington. We need separate checks from families with students who are in the same building but attending different schools.

* What can my student purchase using a pre-paid account?

Students can purchase anything the cafeteria sells using their pre-paid account - lunch, milk, snacks, water, etc.

* How and why do students enter their ID numbers when purchasing food in the school cafeteria?

All students purchasing food in the cafeteria, whether paying by cash, check, or online pre-payment, enter their student ID number at the register. Students in grades K - 2 and students requiring accomodations will be provided with a bar-code card to scan. Other students punch in their ID number on a pinpad at the register. Assigning each transaction to a particular student has several advantages. First, it provides accountability. The government gives the cafeterias a small reimbursement for each student meal we sell. Having a list of exactly which students purchased meals allows the government to be sure we are only requesting reimbursement for meals which were actually purchased. Secondly, the ID number allows the register to identify each student, including those who qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Having all students enter their ID number allows for confidentiality for students who have a Free status, because their transactions appear to be just like students who have prepaid for their lunches. Third, it allows parents to set up an online account and monitor their student's lunch purchases.
