What is the MICCA Festival?

MICCA stands for the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association. This is a state board of educators that supports school performing ensembles throughout the state.

MICCA sponsors several festivals. Many of our performing groups in Franklin participate in these. Groups that choose to perform receive taped feedback from a panel of nationally recognized judges and also receive a half hour clinic with one of these panelists.

What is the Central District Festival?

MMEA (The Massachusetts Music Educators Association) sponsors Concert Festivals at both the middle and high school levels. Band, Chorus, and Orchestra students may audition for entrance to these festivals along with their peers from the central part of the state.

The Middle School Festival auditions are held on the first Saturday in February and are open to students in grades 7 & 8. The High School Festival Auditions are held in November and are open to students in grades 9-12. Students wishing to audition for the festival must be in good standing with their school's music department.

Upon acceptance, students rehearse with their peers 3 times before putting on a concert. This is a competitive endeavor and is for advanced middle and high school students.

MMEA also sponsors an All-State Festival for high school students who have received reccomendations based on their district level scores.

How do I enroll my student in Private Lessons?

Private lessons are offered by the Franklin Public Schools as a cooperative effort between the Music Department and the Department of Lifelong Learning. A brochure is available from either of these departments listing the teachers involved in the program, the day and times they teach, and their instrument.

To enroll:

1. Obtain a brochure by calling the Music Department at 508-541-2100 ext. 3098 or the Adult Education Office at 508-541-2100x 3178.

2. Choose a teacher and contact them using the information provided in the brochure. Set up an agreeable time for the first lesson to take place.

3. Attend the first lesson. At this lesson, the teacher will work with you to complete the paperwork that will allow Lifelong Learning to bill you either by the month or by the semester. The teacher will return the form to the Adult Education Office and you will be billed shortly thereafter.

What are the summer music opportunities available for my student?

The Franklin Summer Music Program is a two-week session designed to provide students in grades 4 – 9 with exceptional instruction in music in a fun and exciting atmosphere. The morning session runs from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon session runs from 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. Students may attend classes in the morning or afternoon, or they may stay all day. Classes offered during the morning session include, Beginner Jump Start Band and Jump Start Strings, Elementary Strings, Guitar Group Lessons, Summer Concert Band and Summer Show Choir. The classes offered in the afternoon include, Jazz Band Workshop, Summer Orchestra and Advanced Guitar Group Lessons. All classes are held in the Band Wing (H-Wing) of the Franklin High School.

Summer Music Mentor Experience Students who have completed ninth grade are eligible for the Summer Music Mentor Experience. Each summer, the Summer Music Program includes a partnership between the beginning students and older more experienced players and leaders at Franklin High School. Students who intern as Music Mentors work with beginning band or string players, show choir students, second year musicians or middle school aged musicians. Music Mentors assist teachers during the lessons and help the teacher with classroom maintenance, concert set up, and the end of the program performances and celebrations. Music Mentors encourage the younger students and serve as role models of good behavior and musicianship. Music Mentors must complete an application and receive prior approval from the Music Director before registering.

Detailed information regarding these classes as well as the registration form can be found at:
