General Business Discussions/Actions

Linda Waters:
• Linda Waters reminded everyone that the budget override special election is next Tuesday. The special education programs will remain intact and can’t be touched by the budget cuts. Two programs are offered this summer: The 2007 Stay Sharp Summer Program and the 2007 Middle School Summer Literacy Club for a nominal fee. There is a brochure for students that meet the financial protocol eligible for a discount on these programs. These two programs are now listed on the SEPAC website.
Programs Discussion:
• The programs are done for the year. Pam asked if we could send a survey out in the students backpack on topic of interests for next year’s programs.
• Discussion on contacting The Federation for Children of Special Needs which has a list of presenters on their website. It was suggested we start with Rebecca (Sudbury) as a contact but we must first decide on the topic before we contact a presenter. The Federation requires a 5 month lead time for presenter requests.
• How many of the dates do we want speakers/presentations? It was agreed upon to have 6 speakers/presenters out of 8 meetings. The other two remaining meetings could be a business meeting and a question of a social parental meeting. A suggestion was made to have the social meeting in September for the first meeting so that parents can get to know each other.
• The flyer containing the meeting dates does not go out until October 1st. We will need to create a September flyer for the September meeting. A question was raised if we could send out 1 flyer that will cover two months. The consensus was 1 flyer a month as opposed to one every two months.
• Some suggestions for topics were: 1. How to help your child with social skills or how to arrange a play date, 2. ADHD topic, 3. Bullying, 4.Question of inviting Wayne Ogden for another presentation, 5. Speaker on the Do’s and Don’ts for social integration.
• An idea was presented for an interactive Children’s Participant Theatre for one of the programs.
• A suggestion was made to have a social period from 7-7:30pm prior to the speaker/presentation. The presenters at booking time would be told that they would present at 7:30 pm but go no later than 8:30 pm so that parents can get home.
• A discussion was held on how to make the meetings more accessible to parents who can’t attend the evening meetings. Could we provide babysitters? Meet on weekends? Meet at one of the schools at 11 am during the lunch hour? Have a webex session? Does the town have a webex account?
Elections
• John Forte was nominated for President, Jill Smith was nominated for Vice President, and Mary Lou Costello was nominated for secretary. Sharon Miller was nominated for treasurer, seconded, and voted in as the nominee.
• Elections were held.
• John Forte voted in as President in favor 9, opposed 0.
• Jill Smith voted in as Vice President in favor 9, opposed 0
• Mary Lou Costello voted in as Secretary in favor 9, opposed 0.
• Sharon Miller voted in as Treasurer in favor 9, opposed 0.
July 4th Food Booth Fund Raiser
• We only have 5 volunteers so far. A suggestion was made to send a notice to the guidance department to see if any students are looking for community service.
Dates:
June 29th 6pm -10 pm
June 30th 10am - 10 pm
July 1 1pm - 10 pm
July 2 6pm – 10 pm
July 3 6pm – 10 pm
July 4 12pm – 6 pm
• Katie is pursuing the meat donation for the wraps and McDonalds for the lettuce and tomato donations.
• John is looking for a full size refrigerator donation.
• Last year we had a vendor donate the money for the rental of the booth. In return SEPAC gave them a tax donation, the vendor’s name on the refrigerator, and a thank you. We are looking to repeat this action.
• Sharon suggested a photo opportunity with one of the Patriot’s super bowl rings. We would need a digital camera and a donation of loaner printer to print the pictures. It would only be for one day and we could potentially do this in the police tent.
Parent To Parent Discussion Group
• The Parent To Parent group is held once a month at Panera’s. There is a steady 4-5 parents a month. Some new parents have been attending. Sometimes it is a certain issue. Terri/Linda receives lots of calls from parents. One parent actually has a social group meeting once a month and asked if maybe Terri could combine her meetings with this social group. A lot of parents have voiced that they really want to meet other parents to form social groups.
Other Business
• A suggestion was made to consolidate the subcommittees list. We need to combine and streamline this list. Focus on a couple of accomplishments we want to do.
• Terri is going to get a list of all Pediatricians’ offices which is about 6-8 in Franklin. We will start dropping off the SEPAC flyers to these offices. Suggestion was made to place the flyers in the clear folders in the offices. We will start with the Pediatrician’s offices but we would like to expand to other physician’s offices.
• It was brought up that parents are not getting the SEPAC flyers. Action: Linda Waters will follow up. She is going to add the question “Did you receive the SEPAC folder” on the survey that she places in the packets to all Individual Education Plan students.

Motion to adjourn meeting. Motion seconded and voted to adjoin.

Meeting adjoined at 8:29 pm on May 16, 2007
