Fact Power

One goal of the Everyday Mathematics program is that each child develop "automaticity" (recalling fact answers automatically) in math fact knowledge. The only way to develop this skill is through memorization. Since all children memorize at a different rate, time must be spent at home to learn math facts.

What are math facts? Addition and subtraction facts are combinations up to 10. (The highest sum is 20). For example 3 + 6 =9, 8 + 8 = 16, 17 - 8 = 9, 20 - 10 = 10 are a few of the facts. remember that , generally, subtraction is harder than addition and may require more time.
Multiplication and division facts are combinations of numbers up to 12. For example 12 x 6 = 72, 5 x 6 = 30, 110 ÷ 10 = 11, 56 ÷ 8 = 7, are a few of thew facts with 12 x 12 = 144 being the highest. Students in first, second, and the first half of third grade need to concentrate on mastering addition and subtraction facts. During the second half of third grade, and in fourth grade multiplication and division should be practiced for mastery by the end of fourth grade.

It is very important that a child assume RESPONSIBILITY for learning math facts. Parents can help by regular practice at home, or wherever you find time (car, doctor's waiting room, etc.) Each child is learning games at school that they can teasch to their parents to help make learning the facts at home more exciting. Some children may work better with oral drill, triangle flash cards, math fact bingo or a combinations of some of these. It is important for parents and children to try out many methods and find what works best for them.

If you have any questions about how to reinforce Math Facts with your child you can contact Margaret Miller (Head Teacher at Davis Thayer School).
