Subtraction Facts Practice

Welcome

Activities and Games to Reinforce Subtraction Facts

Fact Triangle Cards Name That Number Subtraction Top-It Subtraction Shuffleboard When helping children learn their facts, there is a strategic approach to learning them:

1. Minus zero rule: Zero subtracted from a number leaves it unchanged i.e.: 6-0=6

2. Number-before rule or Minus one: To subtract one from the number, state the number in the counting sequence that comes before it. For example for 7-1, what number comes before 7 when I count? 6. 7-1=6

3. Same number rule: A number subtracted from itself leaves nothing. i.e.: 8-8=0

4. Difference of one rule (nieghbors): Whenever neighbors in the counting sequence (6,7) are subtracted the difference is one. i.e.: 7-6=1

5. Subtracting 9 rule: For combinations like 17-9, the difference is 17-10 plus one. (17-10=7 plus 1 = 8, 17-9=8)

6. Complements rule or addtion fact families: Any subtraction combination can be figured out by recalling its related or complimentary addition combination. For instance, 8-5 can be thought of as what do I need to add to 5 to make 8 ? Three because 5 + 3 = 8.
