Catholic Memorial Invitational

Summary

Awesome and yet heartbreaking as the Franklin Panthers traveled to Boston’s Franklin Park on Saturday to compete in the 50th Catholic Memorial Invitational Cross Country Meet. The Lady Panthers had an outstanding day. The varsity team had 3 runners finish in the top 10 and yet lost the meet by 1 point to Bishop Guertin High School of New Hampshire. Captain Mary Cole led the Franklin Panthers and broke Meredith Leenhouts’ school record on the Franklin Park course. Ironically Meredith had gone to Franklin Park to cheer on the Panthers and was there to congratulate Mary on breaking the school record.  Junior Megan Ross also set a school record running the fastest time for a Franklin junior on the Franklin Park course. Not to be outdone by Cole or Ross, Alex Giese set the Franklin High School sophomore record during the race. For Co-Captain Aubree Piepmeier and Emily Stickles the day would bring personal bests on the 3.1 mile course. All the varsity runners improved on their previous times at Franklin Park, including steady Rachel Flynn and Co-Captain Karen Anselmi.

In the freshmen competition Lauren Hagen led the competition from wire to wire and won the race becoming the 2009 Catholic Memorial Freshman Division I Champion. Other medalists for the Panthers in the freshman race included Siobhan Moynihan, Meghan Morrison, and Sarah Georges. Like the varsity runners every freshman improved on their previous times at Franklin Park. A solid performance was turned in by Tamysn Whithers who improved her time significantly during the race.

The next race for the Lady Panthers will be on Saturday at the Hockomock League Championship held at Borderland park in Easton.
