Meet Summary

The 2009 FHS Girls Cross Country Team began its’ season with a scrimmage against Holliston High School. The girls were very impressive finishing in the top 4 spots and many of the runners improved on their previous times at the Holliston Course. The trio of Cole, Ross and Giese ran as a pack and were able to build off of each other. Senior captain,Aubree Piepmeier, finished in fourth place and also looked very impressive in the win. This season a number of Franklin runners will be in contention for the 5th spot on the varsity team. Laura Dowd, Emily Stickles, Megan Shaw, Samantha White and Rachel Flynn will be called on to provide scoring in that important 5th spot. One of the outstanding performances of the meet was turned in by freshman, Lauren Hagen. Lauren finished 13th overall. The Panthers next meet is at the “Sheep Pasture” in Easton next Wednesday as the Hockomock league will hold its’ league jamboree.

Meet Summary

The boys cross country team kicked off their season with a scrimmage meet at Holliston. The weather was typical fall weather – hot sun cool shade. Franklin’s 55 member boys team fielded 46 runners.

Apropos for such a hot day, Franklin’s Henry, Hood and Gutkowski took the early lead into the first mile with a blazing pace of 5:12 at the mile mark. But, the heat and the pace were too much for the Franklin frontrunners as they were slowly over taken by some of the Holliston runners.

Commander Hood, fresh from special training ops, hung on and finished in a close 2nd, as Holliston took 3rd. Captain Gutkowski, also back from elite training ops, raced in for 4th, with Junior Henry right on his tail for 5th. Holliston snuck in a 6th place, as senior Butera, with another Holliston runner hot on his tail, charged in for 7th place.

It looked like Franklin would pull out a hard fought win until Holliston took 8th, 9th and 10th places, displacing Franklin’s 5th and last scoring runner, junior May, who strided in for 11th place.

Holliston pulled off an upset, winning 27 to 28. If any of the 5 scoring Franklin runners passed a Holliston runner, the meet would have gone Franklin’s way. But, with the heat how could they have run any faster? Questions arise: where was Lazzeri? Would he have made a difference? How do we get May to sprint? Is Dowd really getting faster than captain Melfi? Like the Franklin girls team, the boys need to have a 5th runner right up there with Butera. Let’s see who will step up and be that 5th runner.

The boys Panthers meet next at the “Sheep Pasture” in Easton next Wednesday as the Hockomock league will hold its’ league jamboree – refer to the Cross Country web page located in the high school public web page.
