Course Description

Ceramics is a semester course in which students will explore a broad range of techniques and approaches to art through hand built and wheel thrown clay. Students will learn to approach ceramic artwork as both functional and decorative sculptural objects. Develpment of technical skills and artistic vocabulary will include scoring, slipping, hand building (slab, coil, and pinch techniques), wheelthrowing, bisque firing, painting, and glazing, plus the endless alternative possibilites involved with clay. Students are also requires to keep a personal sketchbook and study specific artists, cultures, and art historical movements.

    • 1. Pinch Pots-emphasis on texture and score/slip method
    • 2. CoilPot-Vessel with repeated patter/burnishing
    • 3. Slab Building-Mug with creative handle
    • 4. Bas Relief-Perspective/undercut
    • 5. Slab Building-Fish/texure
    • 6. Ocarina-Whistle
    • 7. Multicultural Study-Global Awareness
    • 8. Sgraffito-Tessellation or choice
    • 9. Slab Building-Dream Box
    • 10. Wheel-available to those students interested, but is not required
