Course Description

Introduction to Art: Exploration of Visual Ideas & Media is a semester course that introduces students to a variety of media. Students will explore many diverse art techniques and approaches as ways of communicating their ideas. Development of technical skills and vocabulary will include all the elements and principles of art; formalism, realism, and abstraction; aesthetics and color theory. projects will include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and mixed media, with emphasis on critical thinking, craftsmanship, and presentation of artwork. Students are also required to keep a personal sketchbook and study specific artists, cultures, and art historical movements. Creativity, craftsmanship, personal effort, critical thinking, sketchbooks, and monthly homework assignments are all included in the grading process. in order to succeed in this class, students must meet the required criteria given for all the assignments, be prepared to question and critique their own work as well as the work of other artists and approach each art process with an open mind and a positive attitude.

SUPPLIES NEEDED (Every day!)

  • SKETCHBOOK – 9x12 Spiral bound sketchbook
  • PENCILS – Package of #2 pencils (10 pkg.) continuous


HONORS v. CP

  • Weekly/bi-Monthly homework in honors = 1+ hour per week (Bi-Monthly = 2+ hour assignment)
  • More emphasis on sketchbook development, multi-step planning, & multi-part projects
  • More emphasis on writing in honors


HOMEWORK

    • Articles & worksheets related to specific artists & art movements
  • RESEARCH & INVESTIGATION

  • You will receive a check minus, a check or a check plus based on how thoroughly you complete HWs.


GRADING SYSTEM

  • 10% = HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS & IN CLASS WRITTEN WORK
    Late HW policy: -20 points/day, after 5 days becomes 0.
  • 40% = CLASS PARTICIPATION – attitude, effort & attendance
  • 50% = FINISHED RESULTS
  • 100% TOTAL
The Final Exam is 10% of your overall semester grade.
