COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduction to Art Part II is a graded course geared for students who wish to continue using a wide variety of art media. As in Introduction to Art, students will explore many diverse art techniques an approaches to communicate their ideas. Development of technical skills and artistic vocabulary will include all of the elements and principles of art; formalism, realism and abstraction; aesthtics and color theory. Projects will also include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and mixed-media, with emphasis on critical thinking, craftsmanship, and presentation of artwork. Students are also required to keep a personal checkbook and study specific artists, cultures, and art historical movements.

Creativity, craftsmanship, personal effort, critical thinking, sketchbooks, and monthly homework assignments are all included in the grading process. In order to succeed in this class, students must meet the required criteria given for all the assignments, be prepared to question and critique their own work as well as the work of other artists and approach each art process with an open mind and positive attitude.

COURSE SYLLABUS

This course can be taken at any point in the art sequence following Introduction to Art. It does not have to immediately follow Introduction to Art, nor are students required to take it.

As in Introduction to Art I, this course covers a broad range of materials and periods of Art History. It builds on fundamental concepts covered in Intro to Art I but explores deeper into those concepts encouraging critical and creative thinking, further developing your personal style and making you a more accomplished artist.

    • Review of letterform abstractions and comp studies from Intro. to Art I
  • Space
    • Review of positive and negative space, composition from Intro. to Art I
  • Drawing
    • Review of contour, figure drawing, perspective from Intro. to Art I
    • Still Life
    • Dynamics, Anatomy
    • Interior Study
  • Color Theory
    • Review of primary, secondary, tertiary, monochromatic from Intro. to Art I
  • Painting Techniques
    • Review of tempera v. acrylic v. watercolor from Intro. to Art I
    • Easels and canvas sheet/canvas board
    • Advanced color-mixing discussion
  • Self Portrait - Realistic
    • Review of non-represetnational, expressive self portrait concepts from Intro. to Art I
  • 3D
    • clay with glaze
    • one other 3D piece such as cardboard,mat board,papier mache,wire,wood,mixed-media...
  • Collage on a 3D Piece
    • Review of composition, contrast and form from Intro. to Art I
  • Group Critiques and Individual Self Assessment
    • Mostly verbal, some written
  • Art History and Vocabulary
    • In connection to hands-on work
  • Developing your Personal Style and Collaborating with Others
    • Group Brainstorms, Discussions, Critiques
    • Compromises and Agreements
    • Collaborative Work and Individual Work

HOMEWORK

  • SKETCHBOOK(minimum of 1 hour per week)
    • Brainstorms, clippings, sketches, reflections, etc...
  • READINGS
    • Articles and worksheets related to specific artists and art movements

GRADING SYSTEM

    20% = SKETCHBOOK

    10% = HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND IN CLASS WORK (Late HW policy - 10 points/day, after 5 days becomes a 0)

    30% = CLASS PARTICIPATION - attitude, effort and attendance

    40% = FINISHED RESULTS

    100% TOTAL

    THE FINAL EXAM IS 10% OF YOUR OVERALL SEMESTER GRADE.
