Course Description

Mural Making is an advanced class designed for students who wish to improve their art skills and leave their mark on Franklin High School. Students do concentrated work in drawing and painting as well as work in teams to design and create murals for the school. They will learn how to develop their ideas into public art as they improve technical skills and teamwork. Creativity, craftsmanship, personal effort, critical thinking, sketchbooks, and monthly homework assignments are all included in the grading process. A consistent willingness to work collaboratively is especially important in this course. Students must meet the criteria given for each assignment, be prepared to question and critique their own work as well as the works of other artists, and approach each art project with an open mind and positive attitude.

In addition to the above information, students taking Mural Making at the honors level are also required to complete weekly homework assignments and pursue all materials and processes with greater depth and focus (including research, technology, individual projects and presentations). This course is for more advanced art students who have excelled in art prior to this course.

Course Syllabus

  • In this course you will be responsible for the successful completion of 2-3 murals, depending on size and complexity.
  • Subject matter will be designed with connections to various departments in FHS and their proximity to your mural location. We will thoroughly explore color theory and composition with each assignment.
  • On the last day that we meet each week, you will be responsible for filling out a self-evaluation. These reflections will help to keep you on schedule, as we must meet deadlines for this class to run smoothly. You will also be able to identify and perfect any flaws that might exist in your paintings.
  • Homework

  • Homework assigned will either prepare you for an upcoming project or reinforce techniques learned in a previous project. Homework assignments should generally take about one hour to complete unless I specify otherwise.
  • Homework should be taken seriously. Clean white drawing paper should be used. I will not accept homework that is ripped, torn, wrinkled, or done on lined notebook paper.
  • You will not be penalized for late homework if you are absent on the day that it is due. However, I will expect it when you return from your absence. For each day a homework assignment is late, you will lose 10 points. Late homework will become a zero after 5 days.
  • I will not chase you for missing work.
  • Critiques and Discussions

  • Responding to art is just as, if not more important than creating it. Both critiques and discussions are great opportunities to gain a new perspective on the various interpretations and ideas floating through the art world. Everyone will be expected to participate.
  • Grading

  • Grades will be broken down as follows:
