Course Description

Portfolio Preparation is designed for students who want to continue their artistic efforts at a more advanced level and/or intend to further their education at an art school, college, or university. Students work in all areas of art with particular emphasis on drawing, painting, and two-dimensional design. Other projects inlude three-dimensional design, art history, and various strategies for looking at, discussing, and writing about their artwork and the artwork of others. Through a variety of projects students are encouraged to look at and respond to themselves in terms of the aesthetic world around them. Students will be given many opportunities to explore varied media, art styles, and subjects. Presentations from art schools through videos and slide presentations are also an important part of this course. To be successful in Portfolio Preparation, students are required to complete homework on a weekly basis and keep a thorough personal sketchbook. Students must also prepare a portfolio of their best work for a group presentation and exhibition in the spring.

  • Homework

  • Homework assigned will either prepare you for an upcoming project or reinforce techniques learned in a previous project. Homework assignments should generally take about one hour to complete unless I specify otherwise.
  • Homework should be taken seriously. Clean white drawing paper should be used. I will not accept homework that is ripped, torn, wrinkled, or done on lined notebook paper.
  • You will not be penalized for late homework if you are absent on the day that it is due. However, I will expect it when you return from your absence. For each day a homework assignment is late, you will lose 10 points. Late homework will become a zero after 5 days.
  • I will not chase you for missing work.
  • Critiques and Discussions

  • Responding to art is just as, if not more important than creating it. Both critiques and discussions are great opportunities to gain a new perspective on the various interpretations and ideas floating through the art world. Everyone will be expected to participate.
