WelcomeThe Business/Computer Technology Department provides courses which meet the needs of students who are planning to enter college or the world of work.Courses are offered for freshmen in Geographic Information Systems,Web Page Design and Internet Skills/Computer Applications. Upperclassmen can enroll in Geographic Information Systems I and II, Internet Skills/Computer Applications, Desktop Publishing, Web Page Design, Visual Communications I and II, Yearbook/School Publications, Advanced Computer Applications, Accounting I and II, Business Management, Every Day Business Law, Business Contract Law, Entrepreneurship, Investments, Marketing/Distributive Education I and II, and Marketing/Distributive Education/Work Experience. The newest offering, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), uses the most popular desktop and mapping software used worldwide, ArcView GIS. It enables the student to create dynamic maps using data from virtually any source. It lets the student work with maps, database tables, and business charts. It lets one see, explore, and analyze data by location, which reveals hidden patterns, relationships, and trends that are not readily apparent in spreadsheets or statistical packages. GIS is used in about fifty occupations including advertising, aerospace, banking, business, crime analysis, engineering, marketing, environmental management, health care, land management, real estate, redistricting, route planning, telecommunications, tourism, transportation, travel, and utilities. GIS II builds on the knowledge students gain in GIS I. Extensions for ArcView GIS will be introduced, including the 3D Analyst and the Business Analyst. ArcView 3D Analyst will assist students in such projects as planning a world-class downhill ski run, evaluating subsurface hazardous materials dispersion, performing dramatic fly-through simulations, and generating three-dimensional mountains, valleys or buildings. ArcView Business Analyst will allow students to locate a business, locate the competition, and analyze customer profiles. Students will use a GPS (Global Positioning System) unit to gather information in the field. GIS students have become involved in real-world applications such as mapping crime in Franklin for the Franklin Police Department, mapping Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary Reservation in Norfolk, and applying GIS to curriculum-related projects. As an outcome of these projects, students have been placed in internships with the police department and the Town of Franklin. |
