Designing a Home Network Worksheet

Worksheet for Creating a Home or Small Office Network

1. Computers:
  • How many computers are going to be connected to this network?
  • Who are the manufactors and the models?
  • Why have you chosen this particular manufacture and model?
  • Do all computers have ethernet cards?
  • How large is the hard drive?
  • How much RAM is in the computer?
  • What is the operating system?
  • What Internet browser and version is going to be used?
  • Are there any other options you have selected such as a CD ROM/DVD combo that can duplicate CDs?


2. Printers:
  • How many printers do you want on the network?
  • Who makes the printer(s)?
  • Why did you choose this printer(s)?
  • What type of printer(s), inkjet, laser, all-in-one with scan, copy, fax capability?
  • If multiple printers, will all printers be on the network?


3. New Equipment:
  • Of the above computers and printers, do any need to purchased? 
  • If so, how many and how much is going to cost?
  • Why are you going to purchase this equipment?
  • When are you going to purchase this equipment?
  • Where are you going to purchase the equipment?
  • Will the new equipment include any waranty or set-up?

4. Network Hardware & Software:
  • Will you need a hub, switch or bridge?
  • Will you need a firewall?
  • What about virus protection?
  • Will you have the latest software, i.e. Java, to support your favorite web sites?


5. Internet Connection:
  • Who is going to provide your Internet connection?
  • Is the Internet connected via dial-up phone or other?
  • If a dial-up connection, does one computer have a modem and will this computer be able to share IP address to other computers?
  • If other type of connection, will the hardware, such as a cable modem, be provided? 
  • Will the ISP (Internet Service provider) set-up Internet access directly to your computer, including configuring the software on the computer?
  • What about additional computers, how are they going to access the Internet?
  • Is there a set-up fee, and if so, how much?
  • How much is the monthly charge?
  • Are there any special rates?


6. Network Diagram:

Sketch out your network: draw a diagram of your house or office where each computer,printer and additional network device is located.  Attached it to this worksheet.


7. Wiring:
  • Who is going to wire the network?
  • Is the wiring going to be snaked in the wall with wall jacks?
  • Are all the network wires going to be pulled back to a cental location?
  • Where is the phone/cable connection to the Internet going to be physically located?


8. Network Set-up:
  • Who will physically connect the computers together, plugs in the cables to hubs, phone jacks, and other devices?


9. Computer Set-up:
  • Who is going to turn on all computers and printers?
  • Which computer, if needed, is going to be the ICS (Internet Connecting Sharing)?
  • Who is going to make sure your ICS host computer has an active Internet connection?
  • Who is going to make sure that all computers can connect to the Internet?
  • Who is going to test printing on all computers?


10. Troubleshooting:
  • What if there is a problem?
  • Who is going to troubleshoot the problem?
