Course Overview

The general purpose of this course is to provide a clear understanding of the charateristics, the organization, and the operations of business. It is for students who want a sound foundation of the business world as they prepare for business or other careers. The general goals of the course are as follows:

  1. Acquire a working vocabulary of common business terms.
  2. Obtain an awareness of the many activities, problems, and decisions involved in successfully operating a business.
  3. Gain an apreciation of the importance of business and management in our economic system.
  4. Develop insights for deciding on specific career objectives from among the great number of employment opportunities in the business world.
  5. Understand facts, procedures, principles, and concepts needed to become effective members of profit-making and not-for-profit making organizations.
  6. Appreciate the dynamics of business that are represented by such elements as organizational change, diversity in the workforce, ethics, global competition, and the link between business and society.

Unit I. Business and Its Environment

  1. Describe the general nature and extent of business and how global competition affects business operations.
  2. Summarize key features of entrepreneurship, causes of failure, and the risks and opportunities that exist.
  3. Discuss how society’s economic, social, and environmental problems influence business policies and practices.
  4. Explain basic social responsibilities and ethical issues as well as how ethics relates to business situations.
  5. Identify basic economic concepts and problems, fundamental principles of capitalism, and other economic-political systems.
  6. Outline the importance, dimensions, and theories of international business, especially on how it impacts on the balance of trade and on importing and exporting operations.

Unit II. Forms of Business Ownership and the Law

  1. Identify the characteristics of entrepreneurs and the process to follow when starting a business.
  2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of sole proprietorships and partnerships.
  3. List the basic features and pros and cons of the corporate form of business.
  4. Distinguish among several specialized forms of business organizations.
  5. Describe how business is both protected and regulated by government.
  6. Discuss reasons for taxes, types of taxes, and the effects taxes have on business decisions.

Unit III. Information and Communications Systems

  1. Describe the hardware, software, and telecommunications aspects of computers.
  2. Discuss the technological, management, and systems aspects of electronic technology.
  3. Explain basic communications concepts and the relationship of communications to corporate culture.
  4. Identify problems related to organizational conflicts, international communications, and other organizational communication problems and offer solutions.

Unit IV. Production and Marketing Management

  1. Describe major marketing activities and how businesses make effective marketing decisions.
  2. Identify factors considered when developing a product for sale.
  3. Describe the relationship between a marketing strategy and a marketing plan.
  4. Identify the information needed to develop an effective marketing plan.
  5. Describe alternative channels of distribution and show the activities involved in moving products through the channel.
  6. Discuss the procedures used by businesses to purchase products and to establish prices for resale.
  7. Explain several methods that can be used to promote products and services effectively.

Unit V. Financial Management

  1. Describe types of business records, record systems, and budgets needed in running a business.
  2. Discuss the need for use of such financial tools as the income statement, balance sheet, working capital, and cash flow.
  3. Analyze financial statements to determine financial performance.
  4. Distinguish among three major kinds of capital (owner capital, borrowed capital, and retained earnings) and among various types, sources, and procedures for obtaining capital.
  5. Explain the characteristics of bank and nonbank financial institutions and the financial instruments provided to investors.
  6. Identify and describe credit plans, credit cards, credit policies, collection procedures, and credit analysis methods.
  7. Discuss the significance of insurance to businesses, common types of policies, and how noninsurable risks can be reduced.

Unit VII. Human Resources Management

  1. Describe the role of human resources management in an organization and the major activities performed by human resources personnel.
  2. Outline the procedures used in employee selection, promotion, and termination.
  3. Discuss the factors to be used in designing an effective compensation and benefits program for an organization.
  4. Discuss the importance of employee training and development and the primary methods used for employee training.
  5. Explain the purpose and characteristics of a career development program.
  6. Justify the need for organizational development to improve employee productivity and motivation.

Unit VIII. Management Responsibilities

  1. Define the role of managers in an organization and the functions that all managers perform.
  2. Outline an effective procedure to be followed by managers when making decisions.
  3. Identify important leadership skills needed by managers and how leadership is demonstrated in business.
  4. Describe the important planning tools used by managers. Explain the importance of organizing activities and the characteristics of an effective organization.
  5. Present suggestions on ways for managers to implement the work of organizations effectively.
  6. Illustrate the steps managers use in a controlling process to improve performance.
