Philosophy

Physical Education is an integral part of the education process and, therefore should provide maximum participation for all students so they may reach the fullest possible development of their potential. Physical Education emphasizes the unique contribution that physical activity makes toward the mental, social, physical and well-being of all students.

Physical Education has as its primary objective the building of sound bodies, proper attitudes toward physical activities, and good standards of social behavior. Therefore, every student should gain the self-satisfaction, and other desirable qualities that come through participation in physical activities.
The activities selected should be appropriate to the student's individual capabilities, applicable to their immediate and long-term needs and relative to their interests at a particular time. The activities provide a laboratory setting in which the student can acquire better understanding of his or her strengths and weaknesses. These activities also provide situations for social and emotional interaction which are compatible with the philosophy and goals of Franklin Public Schools.

Requirements
All students are required to take two semesters of physical education in grades 9-11. Passing six semesters of physical education is a graduation requirement. Physical Education grades impact honor roll status.

Students may only be excused from physical education with a medical excuse. The school nurse can excuse for one class in the case of an emergency sickness. Students must obtain a note prior to coming to class.

Parents/Guardians can excuse for one class with a note that explains the circumstance. Long term absences require a doctor's note. The absence time must be outlined in the note. If the absence is for more than two weeks, students can be assigned to the library by checking with their guidance counselor.

Students have physical education on alternating days with health education.

Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes reflect those outlined in the Massachusetts Health Frameworks and te National Content Standards for Physical Education.

Grading Expectations
Based on 4 criteria:
  1. Attendance-Based on school policy
  2. Preparation-Proper attire and footwear that are safe and appropriate for activity. Students who do not come prepared for the first time will receive a zero for the class, The second time unprepared means a zero for the day and a teacher detention, the third and ensuing times will result in a zero and referral to the assistant principal.
  3. Participation-Student must be actively engaged in activity. "Learn By Doing"
Students are evaluated by a five point system:

    5 Outstanding-proficient, in-depth, interacting

    4 Above Average-skilled, thorough, appropriate

    3 Average-successful, satisfactory, acceptable

    2 Below Average-limited, gaps, inconsistent

    1 Poor-fragmented, not attempted, negative

  4. Assessment-Assessments will be given for each unit. Assessments can include one or more of the following: logs, journals, interviews, open-ended questions, observation, self-assessment, written tests, role playing, simulations, reflections, or projects.

All students are expected to be prepared for class, to be on time and not leave the physical education area until staff gives permission and /or the bell rings. All students are expected to be respectful to other students and staff. All students are expected to ask for assistance from staff when needed. All students are expected to treat facilities and equipment with respect.

Curriculum/Activities
All students are tested twice, Fall and Spring, for physical fitness using the President's Challenge. All other activities are chosen by the students. In some cases the number of students choosing will exceed the limit for the class. In this case, teachers may use a lottery, give upperclassmen first choice, or give those students affected first choice on the next activity unit. Students are encouraged to choose activities from the team, life-long/individual, and fitness/games categories.
