Salve!

awaits us! too, will be lengthy; it will last until next June. And just as scholars have learned a great deal about life in ancient times from reconstructing this working model of an ancient Athenian trireme, we will learn much about the people of ancient times from reconstructing their language in the course of our studies this year. Fear not! Climb aboard! For us, in the twenty-first century, there is no place on our planet that we cannot reach within a day or so. But for the ancients, a voyage could take a very long time indeed. Their methods of travel were quite different from ours. Consider the ship pictured below BOSTON UNIVERSITY LATIN SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

"WOMEN IN THE ANCIENT WORLD"

By Maureen McCarty

-- Saturday, Dec. 13, 12 noon

PICTURED BELOW . . .

. . . are several FHS Latin students who never won a prize for catapult design, but two of them are offering you a chance to win a prize for your Latin skills. Read about the Veni, Vidi, Risi Prize under "Breaking News" on the right.

Another year, and another voyage completed:

Here is the Olympias, and she is pictured here in drydock near Athens. A voyage on an oar-powered ship like this could take quite a while.

Our next voyage together, though, will begin before you know it, so fruamur aestate!

Meanwhile, stay tuned: my next voyage begins soon, and I will try to keep you informed over the summer about the adventures of the Latin teachers participating in the NEH Institute, "Houses of Mortals and Gods," as we trek through Lazio and Campania.

The ladder is steep, but sturdy. A helping hand awaits you at the top. Fear not! Climb aboard!

Your captain is ready to set sail!

Until fairly recently, ancient sculpture was restored to what was believed to be an original state prior to being displayed. An eighteenth-century writer explains that seeing these works in "their ruined condition" would cause "discomfort." Miranda Marvin discusses whether the resulting works are correctly labeled "ancient."

THE VENI, VIDI, RISI PRIZE IN LATIN & CLASSICS ANNOUNCED!

Two former Latin scholars of the Franklin High School class of 1992 have generously offered to reward the hard work and accomplishments of today's FHS Latinists by creating the VENI, VIDI, RISI PRIZE. In this, the first year of its existence, a graduating senior will be selected to receive the $500 cash award at Class Day this spring. To be eligible, a senior must have taken at least 3 years of Latin at FHS, with an overall average of at least B+. Eligible seniors may then submit an essay of up to 250 words, explaining how their enthusiasm for the Classics would make them worthy recipients of the award. Essays will be judged by a panel of former FHS Latin scholars selected by the donors of the prize. Deadline for submitting essays to Guidance is Monday, April 28. See Mr. Lynch for further details.
