I.          Purposes of the course

 

Ø      To introduce the students to the fundamentals of Algebra and Geometry.

Ø      To provide students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge in the areas of Real Life applications of Algebra and Geometry.

Ø      To prepare students for the Real World where employers need people who can communicate effectively, solve complex problems, use technology and work in a group.

 

II.                Student Responsibilities

 

Ø      Be on time to class and sit in your assigned seat.

Ø      Be prepared with your textbook, notebook, pencil/pen, homework, worksheets (when required) and calculator (TI-83 Plus graphing calculator is recommended).

Ø      Keep a notebook for class notes and homework and review.  All entries should be dated and titled.

Ø      Participate in class.

Ø      Do your homework and pass it in on time.

Ø      Promptly make up all work missed due to absence (per handbook).

Ø      Be courteous to other students and teachers at all times.

Ø      Do your personal best at all times. Hard work is always rewarded.

Ø      Refrain from the use of inappropriate language and gestures.

Ø      Refrain from writing on desks and books; refrain from littering.

Ø      Bathroom passes as needed.  No locker passes.

 

Consequences for violations:  Detention, office referral and/or phone call to parents.

  

 

III.               Homework.  Students must try every problem to get a 100% homework grade each day.  The assignments themselves will not need to be 100% correct.  Problems should not be submitted only with question marks next to them or with just a numerical answer and no “work” /explanation.  Examples of how homework should be presented will be given in class.

 

If absent when the assignment is due, then it is due upon the student’s return.  If absent when assigned, then it is due per handbook.

 

IV.              Extra Help.  Extra help will take place in room D202 from 2:05 to 2:35 p.m.on Monday, Tuesday,  Thursday and Friday. Teachers meetings are on Wednesday afternoons.  There is not extra help on Wednesdays.

 

V.                 Grading Policy

EVERYTHING COUNTS!

We will have approximately one test or quiz each week.

Chapter Tests are announced several days in advance.

Quizzes may or may not be announced. There are at least 2 per chapter.

All term exams and final exams will be given based on Math Dept. policies.

Homework (approximately 30 minutes) will be assigned daily.

Chapter Notes and all “B” Worksheets are due on Test day.

                  Chapter Notes              10%

                                Total            100%

 

If a test or quiz day is missed, expect to make up that test or quiz the next day back.  If you are absent or attend a field trip, you are responsible for copying the notes and getting the homework assignment missed.  Class goes on even if you are not here.

(Topic 12 will be covered between topics 7 & 8 in preparation for MCAS)
