FHS Science Student Profile
The Science Department offers in-coming 9th-grade students the option of registering for Biology-College Prep or Biology-Honors courses.  The following highlights the differences between the College Prep and Honors levels of study at FHS:

College Prep students have previously demonstrated their mastery of essential study and communication skills in middle school, and are prepared to gain knowledge and experience in biology through directed instruction, the conduct of project-based assignments, and through the application of scientific methods of experimentation.  Students are prepared to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner, and to seek assistance in class and/or after school when necessary.

Honors students have previously demonstrated advanced study and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and investigate extensions of topics presented in class in a timely and comprehensive manner.  They are prepared to initiate, research, and complete extensions of class work outside of classroom hours, as well as search for and use information resources and media with limited teacher interpretation.  Students are prepared to conceptualize and refine scientific methods to justify solutions.

Specific differences are found in the following areas:


Honors CP
Homework Students are expected to dedicate sufficient after-school time to independently complete assignments that require student initiative and subjectivity. Students are expected to commit sufficient time to complete guided homework.
Project Expectations Students typically prepare projects collaboratively with minimal teacher guidance. 
Students typically prepare projects collaboratively with teacher assistance, direction, and guidance.
Reading Unit & chapter reading from both the textbook and outside sources; assessments rely on content from both textbook and frequent supplemental readings. Readings follow guides provided by the teacher; assessments rely on content from both textbook and occasional supplemental readings.
Writing Students are expected to clearly articulate science content in an open response format and through formal written laboratory reports.  All writing assessments are expected to be polished with minimal spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes.

Placement Criteria Commitment to completing homework; strong reading and writing skills; demonstrates a working ability with scientific methodologies and reasoning.
