TEN STRATEGIES

What to do when you don’t understand?

a. Ask for a definition or synonym

The young child seemed introverted.

b. Ask for an example

The teacher expected the students to be fully prepared on the first day of school.

c. Tell me what you think it means.

d. Say “Tell me more”

My next door neighbor is a very interesting character.

e. Ask for it to be repeated using different words.

Stop being such a stick in the mud.

f. Ask for it to be repeated slower

Said quickly, Could you please open up your books and turn to page 45, look up the vocabulary in the glossary but only do words 1-4.

g. Ask for it to be repeated louder

I wanted to let you know that recess will be 15 minutes longer today.

h. Ask for it to be broken down into steps.

History Day will be on November 1st. I expect you to follow all of the necessary steps. Please make sure your outline is turned in by Friday so that I can check it. Remember this project is worth 50% of your final grade.

i. Use clues in the sentence to help you.

Floridians are disheartened about all of the recent hurricanes that destroyed their homes.

j. Watch the teacher for cues (i.e. body language)

The Boston fans were elated that the Red Sox finally won the World Series.

k. Use visual cues.
