somber = sad, gloomy; adj.


peer = to look; verb



solemn = serious, somber; adj.



tumultuously = crazily; adverb



surge = to move forward in a violent, sudden manner; verb



vital = very important; adj.



frail = weak; adjective



slacken(ing) = to lessen, diminish; verb



immense = huge; adjective



simile = a literary device that compares two unlike objects by using like or as. Example: Wilma was as pretty as a dew drop. Wilma is being compared to a dew drop.



metaphor = a literary device that compares two unlike objects without using like or as. Example: Sue is a bear in the morning. Sue is being compared to a bear to indicate to the reader that she wakes up grumpy like a bear after a long period of hibernation.



personification = a literary device that gives a non-human creature or object a human trait. Example: The sky is crying. The sky can’t literally cry, but rain can seem like tears.



hyperbole = an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally. Example: Sponge Bob was so hungry he claimed he could eat a cow and still have room for a Krabby Patty.




croon (v) soft, low singing or humming



slink (v) to move in a quiet stealthy, or sneaking manner


bureau (n) a chest of drawers, especially for clothes, sometimes with a mirror



tenant (n) one who pays rent to occupy or use the property of another, as land, a house, apartment, or office



stagger (v) to move unsteadily with a swaying motion; totter; reel


heave (v) to throw, especially with great effort


crest (n) highest point or stage; summit, head, or apex of anything



sprawl (v) to lie or sit with the body and limbs stretched out in an awkward or careless manner



mocked (v) treated or addressed with ridicule or contempt; derided



droning (n) a continuous, low, humming sound

lyric = having the musical quality of a beautiful song; adj.

compromise = an agreement reached when opposing people or groups decide to give up some demands in order find a settlement or decision; noun

beguiling – confusing; adj

irregularities = something that’s not regular or usual; plural noun

virtually = practically; adv.

thrust = to push forcibly; shove; verb

treading = walking; verb

verge = edge; noun
