GENERAL STANDARD 8: Understanding a Text (Continued) Students will identify the basic facts and main ideas in a text and use them as the basis for interpretation.

8.25 Interpret a character’s traits, emotions, or motivation and give supporting evidence from a text.

Lisa is the leader of the Grand Avenue Militia and Tom Logan is the leader of the Chidester Gang. Describe the characteristics that cause them to emerge as the leader of their respective gangs. Using the leadership trait descriptions of each leader, evaluate which leader is more effective. Only one leader will be elected. Who should lead the new nation? Defend your answer. Campaign poster. Song. Editorial. TV Commercial. Radio commercial. Speech. Editorial cartoon – artistic representation of life with Tom or Lisa as your leader – what would the world look like?

Chapter 1 and 2 Vocabulary:

3.) Plague - (noun) a disease that spreads rapidly through a population, killing a great many people, or an outbreak of such a disease

4.) Eerie – (adjective) creepy, weird, strange, unnatural

5.) Looting – (noun) stolen goods, crime money or goods that have been stolen or obtained illegally

6.) Reverie - (noun) daydream, trance


Chapter 3 and 4 Vocabulary:

7.) Conjuring - (noun) performing tricks

8.) Bewildered - (verb) confused, puzzled

9.) Repetitious - (adjective) full of repetition, especially unnecessary or tiresome repetition

10.) Venture - (noun) a business that involves risk, but could lead to profit, risky project

11.) Clattered - (verb) a loud rattling noise


Chapter 5 and 6 Vocabulary:


12.) Harried – (adjective) stress


13.) Solarium - (noun) a room built for the purpose of enjoying sunlight, usually with large windows or glass walls.


14.) Pondered - (verb) consider carefully, to think about something carefully over a period of time


15.) Chided – (verb) tell somebody off


16.) Vigorously - (adjective) extremely strong and active, physically or mentally, energetic

17.) Unanimous - (adjective) agreed on by everyone, in complete agreement


Chapter 7, 8 and 9 Vocabulary:


18.) Muttered – (verb) to speak or say something quietly


19.) Mischievous – (adjective) troublesome, full of mischief, damaging


20.) Envious – (adjective) wanting what somebody else has


21.) Chauffeur - (noun) hired driver, to drive somebody from place to place in a car


22.) Embers - (noun) remains of a fire, the glowing or smoldering remains of a dying fire.



Chapter 10 and 11 Vocabulary:


23.) Plotters – (noun) somebody who is involved in a secret plan, especially to do something illegally

24.) Astounded - (adjective) very surprised

25.) Roused - (verb) to wake somebody, or to awaken, from sleep or unconsciousness

26.) Squabbling - (verb) argue noisily over something unimportant

27.) Muffled - (verb) to wrap or pad something with material in order to deaden the sound it makes

28.) Descended - (verb) go down, to go down a staircase, hill, or valley

29.) Converted - (verb) change something’s character.

Chapter 12, 13 and 14 Vocabulary:


30.) Burdensome - (adjective) difficult or worrying to bear or deal with, taxing, oppressively heavy

31.) Debut - (noun) first public appearance of a performer


32.) Shuddered - (verb) to shiver violently, vibrate
to shake or tremble uncontrollably from a reaction such as cold, fear, or disgust

33.) Rummaging - (verb) search through things
to search for or through something by carelessly moving and disarranging things

34.) Dumbfounded - (verb) make somebody speechless


35.) Composure – (noun) calm and steady control over the emotions,
self- control

36.) Resignation - (noun) notification of leaving a job, usually done be a letter to your boss

40.) procession (noun) a group of people moving forward as part of a celebration
