GENERAL STANDARD 8: Understanding a Text (Continued) Students will identify the basic facts and main ideas in a text and use them as the basis for interpretation.
8.25 Interpret a character’s traits, emotions, or motivation and give supporting evidence from a text. Lisa is the leader of the Grand Avenue Militia and Tom Logan is the leader of the Chidester Gang. Describe the characteristics that cause them to emerge as the leader of their respective gangs. Using the leadership trait descriptions of each leader, evaluate which leader is more effective. Only one leader will be elected. Who should lead the new nation? Defend your answer. Campaign poster. Venture - (noun) a business that involves risk, but could lead to profit, risky project 11.) Clattered - (verb) a loud rattling noise Chapter 5 and 6 Vocabulary: 12.) Harried – (adjective) stress 13.) Solarium - (noun) a room built for the purpose of enjoying sunlight, usually with large windows or glass walls. 14.) Pondered - (verb) consider carefully, to think about something carefully over a period of time 15.) Chided – (verb) tell somebody off 16.) Vigorously - (adjective) extremely strong and active, physically or mentally, energetic 17.) Unanimous - (adjective) agreed on by everyone, in complete agreement Chapter 7, 8 and 9 Vocabulary: 18.) Muttered – (verb) to speak or say something quietly 19.) Mischievous – (adjective) troublesome, full of mischief, damaging 20.) Envious – (adjective) wanting what somebody else has 21.) Chauffeur - (noun) hired driver, to drive somebody from place to place in a car 22.) Embers - (noun) remains of a fire, the glowing or smoldering remains of a dying fire. Roused - (verb) to wake somebody, or to awaken, from sleep or unconsciousness 26.) Squabbling - (verb) argue noisily over something unimportant 27.) Muffled - (verb) to wrap or pad something with material in order to deaden the sound it makes 28.) Descended - (verb) go down, to go down a staircase, hill, or valley 29.) Rummaging - (verb) search through things to search for or through something by carelessly moving and disarranging things 34.) Dumbfounded - (verb) make somebody speechless 35.) Composure – (noun) calm and steady control over the emotions, self- control 36.) Resignation - (noun) notification of leaving a job, usually done be a letter to your boss 37.) unuttered (adj.) some kind of unspoken agreement 38.) aspects (noun) one side or part 39.) intent (noun) plan 40.) procession (noun) a group of people moving forward as part of a celebration 41.) alliance (noun) nations or people or agree to cooperate together to achieve a commom goal Ch.1 - Lisa caretaker for Todd - gathered canned food - thinking of others (Todd) - grown up a little – Todd not seem bothersome anymore - stealing/surviving/foraging Ch. 2 - making plans – confident about future - basic needs (vitamins, meds, veggies) - protector – boards up windows – safety from gangs - ch. 3 - flexible, adaptable - courage – traveled to distant farm for basic needs - toned down her bossiness to get Todd to think he’s part of the team - confidence- I can drive the car - risk her safety to survive ch. 3 risk taker - drives car to get supplies stays upbeat and makes a plan even after Todd is beaten up by the Chidester gang Lisa is determined to survive plans for extra defense ch. 4 Julie wonders how Lisa grew up so fast Lisa stays positive Lisa avoids being bossy by praising Todd and asking him to fish recruits militia members to protect neighborhood chapters 5 and 6 -Lisa continues to share ideas - is open to ideas of others -keeps making plans -trusts Craig to go to food warehouse - delegates responsibilities to others such as Craig, the new defense minister - all the kids at the meeting vote to join Lisa probably because she is confident, has plans for the future, and in having supplies and showing her bravery with driving, has proven she's on the ball ch. 7 and 8 Lisa doesn't trust Chidester Gang - they're just after the food "you betrayed me once, how do I know you want do it again." Lisa shares food & meds with others Chidester gang members attack Tom was injured by falling rock trap released by Todd - Lisa's plans for defense seemed to work, though not flawlessly Tom as a leader feels he needs to keep gang alive reactionary - he steals instead of looking and planning |
