Phoenicia – origin a ? may be from Persian area

What: 1. first alphabet!!! (22 letters) No vowels. Influenced Greek alphabet

 

 

2. sailors and traders

            established trading communities along coast

                        stretched from Lebanon to Atlantic

 

            cedar trees

            slaves

            glassware

            tin

            colorful fabrics

 

            (not farmers – didn't trade wheat)

 

when: 3000BC – Egypt took over  for a while

from 1200 BC began to do well

where: from Med. Coast to Spain and Africa coasts near Atlantic

 

why did P die out?

            1. tributes to Assyrians, Babylonians &          Persians (too much $$$)

            2. Greece competing traders

            3. Alexander the Great captured Tyre

            4. Rome won Punic Wars – so long Phoenicia

 

How did they practice religion?

            Polytheistic

            sacrificed babies to please gods

            influenced by other religions

 

How did they become good traders?

            Economy based on sea based trade

Good sailors

 

How do we know about them?

                        From writings of other people (Greeks & Hebrews) most P writings gone since on papyrus and destroyed by enemies
