transformation of a bone into a fossil starts shortly after decomposition when
sediment begins to cover the bones and other minerals gradually replace calcium
within the bones. Over time, the bones harden into stone as water carries more
and more minerals into the tiny spaces within the bone. At the same time, more
and more sediment covers the remains until they are buried under hundreds of
feet of soil. With any luck, geological processes like weathering and the
movement of tectonic plates and heavy rains will bring the fossils to the
surface where an intrepid archaeologist will find them. |
