Describe=Write detailed information about the topic. Use details to create a picture for the reader.

Illustrate=Use examples to explain your answer.

Analyze=Tell how the main ideas and details are related and why they’re important.

Compare=Tell or show how things are alike.

Contrast=Tell or show how things are different.

Explain=Tell about, describe, discuss, put in plain words, give details, make clear, clarify; back up; support

Define=Explain what the subject or topic means.

Discuss=Look at an idea or details of an idea. Draw a conclusion based on these details.

Show=Demonstrate, prove, explain, illustrate

Classify=group people or things according to category. Then, explain how they go together.

Write=Mark, note

List=Name; list; number; write a specific number of details or reasons

Relate=Show how things are connected or related; Tell how one affects the other.

State=Give your ideas about a topic. Keep ideas short & to the point.

Summarize=Restate or explain the main points of an idea or topic.

Critique=Provide the strengths or weaknesses of the topic (positive or negative); criticize

Evaluate=Use your opinion or an expert’s opinion to tell why an idea or subject is important. Present the good and bad points of the idea.

Interpret=Give reasons why a topic or idea is important.

Prove=Use facts and details to show that something is true.

Support=Defend; back it up; prove; provide evidence; State the reasons you agree with a given statement or position, or argue in favor or your opinion.

Sequence=Put in chronological order; put events in order they happen

Judge= give your opinion; determine, decide

RELEVANT=related consider=ponder, think specific=exact, detailed, precise DETAILS THAT WILL SUPPORT YOUR ESSAY TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL

- Paraphrase key words in question (above word)

- Write an "I MUST" statement,

N = CREATE A NOTE PLAN

- Draw a "T CHART"

- Write a T.S. (topic sentence) on top line of T chart

- Title "main idea" on left side

- Title "detail" on right side

S = SKIM, READ,and SELECT the evidence to put on the noteplan

- Skim to get the big picture

- Read actively and identify / mark main ideas & details

- Select relevant information and put in note plan

- Check the notes for thoroughness, accuracy, and
sufficient details
