Causes

? Rivalry between Athens and Sparta
? Sparta feared Athens had too much power
? Athens forced city-states to stay members of the Delian League and to pay money to Athens
? Sparta called Athens bluff—and said had to set free the city-states or else….

Momentous moments during the war

? Sparta invaded Athens
? A plague struck Athens and ¼ of the population died, including Pericles
? Athens suffered from a food shortage
? Small cities of the Delian League joined Sparta and attacked Athens’ army
? Athens, desperate to build a navy, even melted gold and silver from their temples to raise enough money to expand their naval fleet


Factors that led to the end of the war
? Persia gave Sparta money to build a fleet
? Athenian navy tricked into believing harbor was safe and as a result
Almost the entire fleet was captured without a fight!!!
? Athens was starved into surrendering

Aftermath—effect after war was over

? Athens democracy destroyed by Sparta; Sparta set up a cruel oligarchy
? Sparta was merciful and Athenians were not enslaved, nor was Athens burned
