POETIC TERMS:

I. Alliteration= the repetition of the same or very similar consonant sounds at the beginning of words
Ex: Sally sells sea shells…
Peter Piper….

II. Hyperbole= an exaggerated statement
Ex: I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!
It was raining cats and dogs today!

III. Onomatopoeia= words which sound like “sounds;” the use of words that sound very much like the noise they make or the sound they describe;
Ex: Crash! Boom! Hiss! Hush! Bang!

IV. Personification= giving human characteristics to things, ideas, & qualities
Ex: The leaves danced in the wind.
The wind whispered in my ear.

V. Simile= comparison between 2 unlike things using the word “like” or “as”
Ex: Her eyes are like the blue sky.
His voice is as loud as a trumpet.

VI. Metaphor= comparison between 2 unlike things without using “like” or “as”
Ex: He is such a bear today.

VII. Rhyme= the last word of the lines sound alike

VIII. Repetition= words or phrases that are repeated several times

PLAN FOR READING A POEM:
1st reading-Read for enjoyment and feeling of the poem’s words
2nd reading-Look for any words you don’t know and use of poetic devices
3rd reading- Look at the mood-how does it make you feel?
4th reading- What is the author’s message?
