WelcomeGrade Seven Mathematics Mrs. Ackley (ackleyb@franklin.k12.ma.us)Overview: My goal is to provide each student with a risk-free environment that promotes respect and exploration of math. My expectations are given in advance and developed with the class. You will be working in small groups and individually. As a member of a group, you will share your ideas, help others, be helped by others, listen to different approaches to the same problem, basically you will have the opportunity to take on various roles! My goal is for you to become confident in math! Textbook: Impact Mathematics Quick Review Math Handbook - Green to be kept at home. Online Instructions: Impact/ Course Three go to http://www.glencoe.com/sec/math/impact/course3_03/index.php/ma go to online student edition -choose 2004 or 2005 editions NOT 2009 input access code: F3A460E2DF The overall goals of Impact are: • Build new mathematical ideas and connect them to previously developed ideas. • In order to use these ideas effectively, they need be practiced. • Conceptual understanding and basic skills combined will support each other. Homework: Math concepts need to be practiced to develop understanding. I choose my homework problems to achieve the goal of practice, understanding and application. My philosophy is that homework should be meaningful. Homework will be: * Assigned every night and should be completed in your notebook. * Must be completed on time (this will allow maximum benefit from class discussion) * If you are absent, you are required to make it up. The schedule is a day for every day missed. * At the end of the term a grade will be assigned for homework. The grade is based on effort, showing your work and making sure you correct your homework. If you are struggling with your homework: * Go back to the problems we completed in class. It may be helpful to go back a couple of days. * Look at the new problem and start to write all that you know about the problem. You will be surprised at how this will help you! This is a great test taking strategy. * Nightly homework should take no more than 20 to 25 minutes. Please let me know if this is not the case. Assessment: Multiple forms of assessment will be utilized. My goal is to allow ample opportunity for success. I will administer a pre-test before each unit to determine what each child knows then plan instruction accordingly. Each unit is made up of quizzes, math labs, and the unit test will serve as a posttest. All assessments will require a parent signature and each student will correct any incorrect responses. Projects, MCAS style word problems in addition to math reflections will be assigned. I grade on a total point system. I have provided a sample below: Trimester grades for "Student A" There were three tests. The scores were 32 out of 40 44 out of 50 31 out of 40 There were four quizzes. The scores were 12 out of 15 10 out of 10 7 out of 15 18 out of 20 HW folder was collected. The score were 12 out of 15 Math Reflections were collected four times: 2 out of 2 2 out of 2 1 out of 2 0 out of 2 Total points 171 out of 213 Trimester grade ((171)/(213))x (100) = 80 Materials: Scientific Calculator - I have a limited number of calculators which I will loan you for the year, if this purchase is a financial burden. Important - Extra help: I will be available for extra help from 2:00 to 2:15 every day or take a pass on the bulletin board for extra help during h period. ASK QUESTIONS! Ask questions during class. Ask after school. Try to anticipate the need for extra help. Do not wait until immediately before a test to seek help. Fire Drill Information: (from M139) - Turn left - staying to the right side of the hallway and stairwell, Exit to the hill area across the road. Please remain quiet so you can hear for any additional instructions. |
