Absolute Location

Where something is using latitude and longitude.

Relative Location

Where something is in relationship to something else.  (It must include another location, a direction and distance.)

A physical feature making up the Earth’s surface

Waterway

A physical feature of the Earth consisting of water.

Climate

The pattern of weather over a long period of time

Precipitation

Rainfall and snowfall

Tropics

The area on the globe between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn

High latitudes

Areas furthest away from the equator – tend to be cold

Low latitudes

Areas closest to the equator – tend to be hot

Middle latitudes

Areas between the high and low latitudes – tend to have more moderate climates

In-between – not mostly hot nor mostly cold

Natural Resource

A material source of wealth that occurs in a natural state and has economic value

Raw Material

A material or resource that is still in its natural state, before being processed or manufactured into a useful product.

Recyclable Resource

A resource that cycles through natural processes in the environment; water, nitrogen and carbon are examples.

Renewable Resource

A resource that the environment continues to supply or replace

Nonrenewable Resource

A resource that the environment cannot replace or reproduce. 

Fossil fuel

A nonrenewable resource create from the remains of plants and animals (coal, oil, natural gas)

Population Density

The average number of people living in a given area.

Population distribution

How population is spread out across a region

Demographer

Someone who studies population.

Birthrate

The number of live births each year per 1000 people.

Death rate

The number of deaths per year per 1000 people.

Migration

A movement from place to place

Immigrant

A person who moves to a new country in order to settle there.

Urban

Having to do with the city.

Rural

Having to do with the country side

Suburban

The area outside of cities where many live

Urbanization

The movement of populations toward cities and the resulting city growth.

Economy

How a country’s people make a living

Cash crops

Food grown and sold for a profit

Subsistence farming

Being able to only grow enough food to survive

Commercial

(farming/fishing) produced in large amounts to be sold for profit
