To Determine Adjective and Adverb Clauses:
1) Find the clauses. Look for our "clue" words (subordinate conjunctions or relative pronouns) to determine the start of a possible subordinate clause. Then decide where that thought ends. 2) Next, identify if the clue word is a subordinate conjunction or a relative pronoun. (Subordinate conjunctions begin adverb clauses. Relative pronouns typically begin adjective clauses.) 3) Double check by determining what part of speech the clause modifies. (An adjective clauses modifies a noun or pronoun. An adverb clause mostly modifies a verb.) 4) A further help is to find the subjects and verbs after the clue words. Often, but not always, an adjective clause has only the relative pronoun and a verb. The relative pronoun is ALSO the clue word. (There are exceptions to #4 but I won't try and trick you with these.) |
