Math Counts Competition

Parent Permission Letter

Your child has expressed in interest in competing in the regional level of the Math Counts Competition that will be held on Saturday, February 7th, 2009 in Framingham, MA.

Logistics:

Each of the Mathletes who is selected to compete in this competition is required to:

- provide transportation to and from the competition site in Framingham (car pooling is encouraged)

- bring their own calculator and pencils

- arrive by 8am and be able to stay until 2pm (if eligible for an award)

8:00 Registration

8:25 Introduction

8:30-9:10 Sprint (40 min)

9:10-9:50 Break (donuts, juice and water)

9:50-10:25 Target (35 min)

10:40-11:00 Team Round (20 min)

11:00-12:00 Lunch is provided (pizza)

12:00-1:00 Countdown Round

1:00 Awards

Awards:

The top 12 students will compete in the Countdown Round.

Awards will be given on Saturday as follows:

o Trophies to the top 6 individuals and their coaches

o Trophies to the top 6 teams and their coaches

o Trophies to the top 4 countdown winners

o Trophy to the most improved school

o Trophy to the best NEW school

o Recognition to the top Alternate Team

The top 6 teams will move on to the State Competition.

If a student is one of the top 6 students and not a member of one of the top 6 teams, that student will also go to the State Competition.

Scholarships are awarded for four year full tuition at Wentworth Institute of Technology to the top four State winners. A fifth scholarship will be awarded to the top girl in the State competition if there are no girls in the top four students.

All students, no matter which Team you are on, are considered eligible to compete at the state level if they are among the top scorers.

Next Steps:

I will be conducting a school-wide competition to select the top 8 students who will represent Horace Mann Middle School at the Math Counts competition. I am aiming to have that competition next week after school. Please let me know your child’s availability after school and which days might work for you.

If you and your child are still interested in the Math Counts competition and you are able meet the requirements (free on February 7th and can be responsible for getting your child to the competition and home again), please complete the permission form below and either return it to Mrs. Ridley or send Mrs. Ridley an email (ridleya@franklin.k12.ma.us) by Monday, Jan 26th

I give permission for my child to attend the Math Counts Competition in Framingham on Saturday, February 7th if he/she is selected as a member of the Horace Mann Math Counts Team. I understand that I am responsible for arranging transportation to and from this event and my child will be able to stay until 2pm if necessary.
