WelcomeHi! My name is Meghan Coyne and this is my sixth year in the Franklin Public School disctrict at Horace Mann Middle School, and my third year in the 7th grade. I received my bachelor's degree in Educational Psychology from Salve Regina University, and my Master's of Science degree in Special Education from Simmons College. I taught for two years prior to Franklin for the Bi-County Collaborative. I have two young children ages 5(Ethan)& 2(Maddy)who keep my husband and I very busy at home, but I am never too busy to remain after to work with students who may need some extra help.I will be sending home weekly update emails begining September 18th, which will be called the "Weekly Heads Up" to help keep parents in the loop about what is going on here at school. I will also call home periodically to touch base and check-in. If you have any questions, or would like to talk please feel free to call the school, or email me: coynem@franklin.k12.ma.us My extension is X2815 I look forawrd to a really wonderful year together! |
Math Literacy & MCAS Support LiteracyMath Literacy:This class runs oppostite P.E. classes instead of a Spanish class and targets difficulties in basic operations and skills. We tackle the four operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and +/- integers. We also wok with mathematical vocabulary and incorporate literacy strategies into the class using things like the Frayer Model. As a class we also have been working with estimation, as well as measurement and time & money everyday life math skills. THe students earn money and keep a "Check book" in order to work with money and decimals by balancing their check books on a regular basis. They will be given opportunities to spend their money, once a term. Students are also exposed to MCAS open response strategies and questions, as well as MCAS short answer questions. This class is assinged homework once a week to be handed in and graded. MCAS Support Literacy: This class runs during the Academic Extension block on Days 2 & 5 of the cycle. These students were identified by an analysis of MCAS data. Students in this class will be working on strategies for answering both open response questions as well as short answer questions taken directly from MCAS problems. Each student has individual "target" areas (based on the item analysis that I did from their 6th grade MCAS results) that they will be working on this year. For my students it is topics such as measurement, geometry, estimation, and number sense. Students will be periodically and informally assessed on thier progress which will be documented in progress reports to go home each term. This class is not formally graded, and was put in place to support students increasing their scores on the MCAS Mathematics test in May. |
