Literacy

Literacy

This year in Literacy we will be hard at work!  We will be working on learning Phonics,Vocabulary Development,Grammar,Writing in response to reading, Reading Comprehension.  Students will come to my Literacy class instead of a going to a foreign language class.

In Literacy, we will learn to become better writers, improve our reading comprehension and fluency. Also don't worry we will also be keeping a close eye on those binders! We will organize binders and lockers making sure every student has what they need to be successful in sixth grade.  For many of our students the lockers is a beginning of independence.  Say “good bye” to having their own desk and say “hello” to having a locker and sharing it with a locker buddy! We will do organizational checks with their lockers to keep it clean and organized.  We will be reviewing and previewing vocabulary of upcoming chapters.     Students will work on sentence expansion, and having their sentences sparkle and seeing them become confident writers.   They will also be working on improving their reading skills.  Students will be focusing on different reading strategies to improve with their fluency, accuracy, and reading comprehension.  Students will be doing independent reading, working on those reading strategies!

Upcoming Meetings:

            Open House

            September 23rd at 6:30 p.m.

Reading:

This year in Reading I will be focusing on phonics based instruction. We will also be busy at work with reading comprehension.  The phonics based reading class teaches students how to fluently and accurately decode and encode (spell).  We will be working on reading comprehension strategies as well and reading passages at the student level.  The reading comprehension class is where students learn to become better readers using specific strategies we teach and learning phonics for encoding and decoding to become better readers.  Each month we learn a different strategy to better connect to what we are reading.  The strategies we will be working on this year are: visualization, questioning, mark/highlight, react and connect, clarify, and predict.  We also will be learning how to use context clues, preview questions at end of chapter, review vocabulary.  It will be a busy year, but a rewarding year
