Food Allergies


*An increasing number of students have life-threatening food allergies *



Foods that most commonly produce allergic reactions are:

* peanuts and tree nuts
* eggs
* shellfish/fish
* soy
* milk


Types of Allergic Reactions:

* Ingestion - When a child eats or drinks food containing the allergen
* Inhalation - When the child reacts to the smell of the food containing the allergen
* Touch - When the child reacts by touching the food that contains the allergen


Prevention of an allergic response:

* Avoidance of foods that trigger the allergy is the most important aspect but careful reading of all product labels is also very critical.


Safety Measures for the allergic child in school:


* There is no sharing of food in the cafeteria or in the classrooms.
