Readability

Readability is the approximate grade level of a book. For children to be independent readers, they need materials that meet their readability level. Here is a simple way to determine readability.
To check for readability using Word:

1. Open Word

2. Key in text at random for the book - approximately 100 words. Be sure to use all of the punctuation and paragraphs of the original text.

3. Pull down the Tools menu and go to Options

4. Click on Spelling and Grammar

5. Check the box that says "Show readability statistics"

6. Click OK

7. Highlight the text

8. Pull down the Tools menu and go to Spelling and Grammar (note: if you have not made a spelling or grammar error, click YES to continue testing.

9. This gives you the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level equivalency. For accuracy, check at least three samples from different parts of the book.

10. For accuracy, check at least three samples from different parts of the book.
