Special Opportunity for Horace Mann Students

Worcester Art Museum Field Trip

with Mosaic and Math Workshop

If you are interested in ancient cultures and their artwork, or wonder how math, science, and engineering are applied to them, we have a special opportunity for you!

Twenty-five students from Horace Mann Middle School will tour the Worcester Art Museum and participate in a workshop where they will learn the art of mosaic-making.  Instructors at the museum will teach you about ancient Roman culture along with the math and art of creating mosaics.

Following our field trip, an instructor from the Worcester Art Museum will visit our school on several occasions to continue teaching us how to create mosaics at our school.

This is a project that will involve commitment of several days of your time:

  • Day of field trip
  • 6-8 additional sessions during H-period on Thursdays until late bus arrives

     (1-3:15 pm)

Date of Field Trip:  December 11, 2008

Where:  Worcester Art Museum

Number of students:  25

Fee: $10 covers bus and all workshops

Criteria:

All grades may apply for this activity; however priority will be based on seniority (i.e. 8th grade gets top priority, then 7th, then 6th).

You must be missing no more than 1 homework assignments in all of your classes.

       You must be taking Latin.

You must write a short essay on why you would like to participate in this field trip (due by December 1st – by end of school – handed personally to Ms. Donaldson room M137).

What connections can we make at school

  • Latin – How did the ancient Romans use mosaics in their homes?
  • Math - What formula would we use to create the precise geometric designs found in ancient mosaics?
  • Art - How can we design our own mosaics?
  • Science - What type of tile will absorb/ reflect heat and light in our courtyard?
  • Engineering – What materials do we use and how can we properly install our mosaics?
