My name is Cathy Taylor, and I am the team chair for HMMS special education. 
Horace Mann Middle School has a continuum of services for special education students. Specialized instruction occurs within the classroom in inclusion settings, as well as in separate settings for some replacement classes. We find middle school students respond well when included in the regular education setting as much as possible. Individualized modifications and accomodations are determined at the initial, annual review and three year evaluation meetings with the team made up of teachers, special edcuation staff, and parents. Our inclusion specialists are trained in remedial reading programs such as the Wilson Language Program and Project Read and Write. They are also experts in teaching all the study strategies and organization strategies that are so important to learning in the middle school setting. We also have a group of wonderfully trained Educational Support Personel (ESPs) that assist within the classroom with academics and organziation. Direct service and/or consultation in language, counseling, vision, and occupational therapy are also available as determined in the team meeting. |
