Curriculum Standards


The fifth grade curriculum is based on the Massachusetts State Frameworks. The following are topics and standards addressed in fifth grade.

Mathematics
Number Sense and Operations:

  • Uses exponential notation to represent positive numbers
  • Determines equivalent fractions and decimals
  • Adds and subtracts decimals
  • Multiplies and divides decimals
  • Adds and subtracts fractions
  • Adds and subtracts positive and negative numbers
  • Applies order of operations
Patterns, Functions, Algebra:
  • Creates and interprets graphs and tables
  • Replaces variables with given values and simplifies
Geometry:
  • Identifies polygons based upon properties
  • Graphs points on a coordinate graph
Measurement:
  • Identifies, measures, and constructs various angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals
  • Finds area and volume
Data Analysis, Statistics, Probability:
  • Describes data sets using median, mean, mode, maximum, minimum, and range
  • Constructs and interprets stem-and-leaf plots and line plots accurately
Applies to All Standards:
  • Applies problem-solving strategies
  • Communicates mathematical reasoning effectively

Organizes, predicts, and communicates the concepts of:
