Book Clubs for Kids
Book clubs are a great way to get children excited about reading! Here are a few suggestions for parents/guardians interested in starting book clubs for their children.

•Book clubs should be fun! Children should want to participate. Don’t force a child to take part in a book club because then reading becomes a punishment instead of a joy. You can certainly try out a book club- attend one or two meetings and see how it goes. Your child may discover a new activity that he/she will enjoy.

•The children who belong to the book club should be approx. the same age, and it helps if they know each other. They will be more comfortable having a discussion if the group they are talking with is comprised of familiar faces.

•The children in the book club should have a choice in what they read. There are many great books available at the library and at bookstores. Children will be more invested in a book they choose to read than a book that is chosen for them by adults.

•But adults should preview books before children read them to make sure they are appropriate. Make sure the content of the book is age-appropriate for the group of children. Also, be sure your child is going to be able to read and enjoy the book. If the book is too difficult, the child is going to struggle with reading it and will not enjoy it.

•A good size for a book club is 8-12 members. There should be ample time between meetings for all members to read the book. Try to have a regular meeting schedule, maybe once a month or every two weeks.

•There are websites with ideas and suggestions for kids’ book clubs. Here are two you may want to check out.
