Celebrating Ten Years

Celebrating Ten Years!

On September 3, 1996 Jefferson Elementary School, named for Thomas Jefferson, was opened to deal with the ever-growing elementary school population of Franklin, Massachusetts.

Adjoining the school is the Remington Middle School, which houses grades six through eight. The two schools share a library, cafeteria and office space. The library, was dedicated in 1998 to former Franklin Superintendent Dorothy Swanbeck.

In the beginning, the school served children from preschool through the fifth grade level incorporating a curriculum, which included art, music, health, library services, instrumental music, and physical education. In the years since, Spanish was added and health was dropped. Physical education went from twice a week to once a week.

In that first year, the building had four preschools doing both A.M and P.M. sessions. In the second year, the preschool was relocated. There were three classrooms for kindergarten. One was a full day program the other two held A.M. and P.M. sessions. There were five first grades and four classrooms each of second, third and fourth. Only three fifth grade classes were necessary. Strangely, the fifth grade classes were located in the Remington side of the building. Just two years later, four modular classrooms were added to accommodate a booming population of students.

In 1996 about 70 teachers, staff and support personnel were in place when the doors opened. Ten years later, 28 remain (almost 40%). Who will be here in ten more years?
