The FDR Memorial

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is a very new memorial, but it still holds lots of historical facts. This memorial honors Franklin Delano Roosevelt, our thirty-second president. The memorial was dedicated to Washington D.C. on May 2, 1997. It was designed by Leonard Baskin, Neil Estern, Robert Graham, Tom Hardy, and George Segal. Neil Estern was in charge of carving the statues. The F.D.R memorial cost $48,000,000 to build! This may sound like a lot, since the memorial has 4 rooms and no roof. It has a lot of statues, though. The memorial is made mostly of granite, clay, and bronze. The walls are made of granite. The statues were made in clay. Most of them were later cast in bronze. The memorial is located near the National Mall, along a long row of cherry trees and between the Tidal Basin and the Potomac River. There are lots of statues at this memorial. The most famous statue is ten feet tall and shows Roosevelt in his wheelchair. Next to him is his trusty Scottish terrier, Fala. This memorial is also the only one with a statue of a First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. In conclusion, this memorial is a fascinating place of honor to visit.

The F.D.R memorial is interesting, amazing, and different, all in one! The memorial is amazing because the statue of Fala is almost as big as a third grader! The memorial is interesting because, while most memorials have 2 rooms, the F.D.R memorial has 4. The memorial is funny because at one time FDR used reddish-gray field stone to build a library. Workers thought the memorial should be made with the same stone. Unfortunately, the stone that Roosevelt liked could not be found in New England. Lawrence Halprin traveled all the way to the border of South Dakota and Minnesota before he found a rose-colored stone. 6,000 tons of granite were also used in the memorial. Think of how many trips that was! The memorial is different because it has no roof, unlike many other memorials in Washington D.C. The memorial is neat because landscape artists planted 300 trees and 3,000 shrubs at the site of the F.D.R memorial! Another interesting thing about the memorial is the writing. There is Roosevelt’s 4 freedoms, the description saying that Roosevelt hates war, and the description saying that no single person should have complete power over our country. In closing, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial amazes many people.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a very interesting and important person to our country. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the thirty-second president of the United States. Roosevelt was president when the Pearl Harbor incident happened. Roosevelt showed that war is bad and makes everybody sad, and war makes people die. Poor Franklin D Roosevelt was stricken by polio on his summer vacation. After Roosevelt was stricken with polio, he opened up a camp for paralyzed people. Roosevelt died in Warm Springs, Georgia, in 1945 while serving his fourth term as president. Franklin Delano Roosevelt worked hard all his life and deserves the memorial built in his honor.
