The White House is where the President of the United States works and where he and his family live. The President is in charge of the executive branch of our government. As President he is in charge of the U.S armed forces, he enforces the laws of our nation, and he can veto bills made by Congress or agree and sign the bill into law. The President and his staff hold many meetings inside the White House . The President and his staff make many important speeches at the White House. The President can have as many as 30 formal dinners each year in the State Dining Room. The White House is an important place to our country. The White House is a very easy building to spot in Washington D.C. James Hoben, an Irish architect, designed the White House. Building was started on Oct. 13, 1792 and finished in 1800. The White House is 70 ft tall, 168 ft wide east to west, 85 ft wide north to south, and it has 132 rooms. The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The White House is made out of stone that can be found around Washington D.C. The White House was burned down by the British in 1814, but later rebuilt. During the Truman renovation bulldozers dug a two story basement in the White House. The White House has many columns and two porticos; a portico is a fancy roof top opening to a building. The White House is one place everyone should visit. The White House is a very fascinating place and there are many details that you probably don’t know about it. In the War of 1812 the British wanted to burn down the White House, as they got close James Madison’s wife would not leave the White House until a famous picture of George Washington was taken out of the house. George Washington was the only president not to live in the White House. Alligators, ponies, tigers, pigs, parrots, dogs, ducks , and cats are just some of the pets that have lived in the White House. Another interesting fact about the White House is that when Harry S. Truman moved in the flooring was so weak a piano fell through. The White House has eleven bedrooms and at least thirty-two bathrooms. The State Dining Room can hold about 140 people. President Lincoln’s son Willie died on a bed in the White House. Also, Grover Cleveland was the only President to be married in the White House. He was married in the Blue Room. The White House used to be called “President’s Palace,” the “President’s House,” and the “Executive Mansion.” President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name in 1901. On Nov. 2000 the White House celebrated its 200th birthday. The White House is full of interesting stories.
