READING This year we will read a variety of genres. We will continue to work on our pre-reading strategies for reading non-fiction. To do this we use our Time for Kids magazines and our Massachusetts Weekly Studies as well as other pieces. We make sure that when we attack a piece of non-fiction we SQRRR (Survey or Skim, Question, Read, Recite, and Review). We will do author studies on Audrey Wood and Robert Munsch. We will also look at the poetry of Edward Lear, Rachel Fields, and Laura Richards. Our wonderful mystery readers will be reading us some of their books and poems. They are so great to listen to! WRITING The third grade writing program will teach children to organize their thoughts for writing. We will then use those ideas to write expository, narrative, persuasive, descriptive, and compare and contrast pieces. Students will then learn to edit their own work for capitals, punctuation (including commas and quotation marks), sentence structure and word choice.
