Social Studies

In social studies, we will begin the year by covering the basic geography of the world. Students will become familiar with latitude and longitude lines and will even be able to use atlases and globes to locate places using these lines. As a quick review, we will also cover the 50 United States and their capitals. After we have reviewed, students will begin learning about the various regions of the United States of America. For each region, students will conducting research to discover more about the geography, the history, the civis and government, and the economics of the various regions. Students will also learn about Canada and Mexico through other smaller units. We will also discuss and read books about immigration. The regions of the United States are as follows:

1. New England

2. Middle Atlantic States

3. Atlantic Coast and Appalachian States

4. Southeast and Gulf States

5. South Central States

6. Great Lake States

7. Plains States

8. Mountain States

9. Southwest States

10. Pacific States

 Math

In mathematics, students will be continuing with the Everyday Mathematics Program. In the first term, students should begin to master the operations of addition and subtraction of small and large numbers. They will also be introduced to the concepts of multiplication and division in term one. Students should be studying their math fact operations every night. My suggestion is that they make their own flashcards to help them internalize these facts.
