WelcomeTips for Increasing FluencyWhat is fluency? Fluency is the ability to read smoothly and automatically, without word recognition problems. Fluency is necessary for good comprehension and enjoyable reading. Students who read effortlessly can concentrate on making meaning from text-the major goal of reading instruction. How can parents help to improve fluency? There are a number of short, simple exercises that parents can do at home to help their children increase their reading speed and automaticity. 1. Repeated reading strategy: Select a page from a book your child is reading and follow these steps: *Read the page aloud with good expression while tracking under each word with your finger. Your child should look at the words while you read. *Read the same page again following the previous procedure only this time, have the child read along with you. *Have the child read the page alone. |
