Dear Family,

We cannot stress to you enough the IMPORTANCE of practicing Outlaw Words and Basic Sight Vocabulary words with your children on a daily basis.

Outlaw words are words that cannot be sounded out phonetically and must therefore be memorized. These words must be learned to MASTERY with instant sight recognition. Without mastery, these words become major stumbling blocks and hinder both fluency and comprehension.

This list is divided into two parts.

  • Outlaw words - Need to be memorized.
  • Basic Sight Vocabulary – Words that are used in reading and writing on a regular basis.
Homework: Each week, make flashcards of 5 of these words using 3½ x 5” index cards. Have your child practice reading and spelling these words every day as part of homework. Remember, the goal is mastery – instant sight recognition. Add 5 more words each week, continuing to practice the old words.

Please practice Outlaw Words first! The words near the end of each list are more difficult, but are very common in reading and writing. Practicing these words will be the greatest gift you can give your child in first grade.

Thank you for helping your child become a successful reader!
