Math: We
are currently mid way through Unit 3, which
addresses both U.S. Customary and metric measurement. Students
will begin learning multiplication
and division facts in Unit 4.
Since
there is not enough time during the school day for drill, it is
important that
your child practice all basic facts nightly. The night before a unit
exam, I
will send home a unit review for homework.
The review
is similar in format to the test.
Reading: All
students have been individually tested to
determine their beginning of the year DRA level. In
Readers’ Workshop students have been
monitoring for meaning by utilizing various comprehension strategies.
We have
completed two interactive read aloud books, Catwings and Catwings
Return by
Ursula K. LeGuin.
We just
started
reading …If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620, which is a
question/answer
book.
In December
we will be reading Fantastic
Mr. Fox and The Magic Finger both Roald Dahl.
Students
continue to read their own selection of just right books during
independent reading.

Language/Writing
Arts:
We have finished
the Launching Unit in Writers’ Workshop. All
students have “published” their first
personal narrative.
You will be
able to
read your child’s story and see their writing progress when
you come to Family
Fun Night on November 9th.
The next
unit
in writing will focus on raising the quality of writing personal
narratives.
By
continuing to practice
writing personal narratives, your child will learn to write longer and
more
significant stories.
During
November and December your child will learn and
review the following language skills:
categorizing,
author’s purpose, author’s viewpoint, singular and
plural
noun forms, syllabication, singular and plural possessive noun forms, and
word relationships-synonyms, antonyms,
homonyms.
Social
Studies/Science:
We
have finished the Solar System unit in science. In
November your child will learn about the
history of the Wampanoag Native American tribe and their way of life. This
unit will be followed by a unit on the
Pilgrims.
The next
science unit, Sound,
will not be addressed until after the holiday break.
On
November 14th the third grade will take a field trip to
Plimoth Plantation.
Students
truly enjoy
this trip because it is so interactive and hands-on. Please
be sure that your child is dressed
warmly for the trip as we will be spending the day outside.
As
always, if you have any
questions or concerns, please
don’t hesitate to contact me.
