Handbook 2009September 2, 2010Dear Parents, Everyone has gotten off to a great start in room 23! All of the children seem excited to be back, and are working very hard already. I would like to inform you of a few things that will make this a smooth year for your child, and will aid me in establishing an open line of communication with you. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 541-5260 ext. 2023, or send me a note. I will get back to you as soon as possible. I generally respond to e-mails with a phone call, so if you send me an e-mail, make sure you include a phone number where you can be reached. ORGANIZATION, CLASSWORK, HOMEWORK As you can see by the assignment notebook/sheets, we are working toward improving organizational skills as a positive outcome of fourth grade. This will help to keep you informed of assignments, tests, and up-coming projects. Homework should take approximately 40-45 minutes a day. Math will be included as 1/3 to ½ of the homework each day and students should read for 15 minutes each night. If a student misses four assignments, they will be letting you know in writing, and will have to make up these assignments. A parent or guardian must sign all assignment notebooks every Thursday evening on the line indicated. If a student does not have a signature, this will count as “No Homework”. The accuracy and completeness of the assignment notebook will be graded. GRADING The Franklin Public School System has adopted a “Standards Based Report Card” as a method of reporting student progress to parents. Each core curriculum area also has a term progress grade (see attached). The students in grade 4 will be evaluated on daily assignments and tests using a numeric system of 4-1, with 4 being the highest grade and on occasion, percentages. These grades will be used to determine the term progress grade. I will review the grades at the end of each term and make a determination as to whether or not a student is beginning, progressing toward, or meeting a specific standard. The grade of “E” for “exceeding the standard” will only be used in rare instances for work that goes beyond “consistent outstanding work.” Lab Classroom For the past two years, I have been a LAB classroom teacher at Kennedy school. Two other teachers will take over this role this year, but I may still be called upon to lend a hand with teachers in our building and across the district to help with the literacy initiatives. We will use the Reader’s Workshop model for reading instruction. Students will be reading books of their own choosing daily, responding in a journal and conferencing with me about their reading progress. There will not be any monthly book projects, but there will be nightly reading homework (15 minutes minimum). The goal is daily reading practice. Please let me know if you have any questions. Math Fact Practice The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recommends that regular practice of math facts (as little as five minutes a night) is the best way for students to achieve mastery. At this time, it is expected that students have mastered the addition and subtraction facts, and the focus of fourth grade is mastery of multiplication and divisions facts with speed and accuracy. Students will be quizzed frequently on these facts using a timed “math mad minute,” on the computer. Please let me know if you have any questions. KLEENEX CLUB If possible, please send into school 1 box of Kleenex in September. This enables everyone to have a plentiful supply, whenever necessary, throughout the school year. Thanks!!!!! SNACK TIME There will be a 5-10 minute working snack break mid-morning (10:30 a.m.). Thanks for keeping it limited to one food item and one drink. BIRTHDAYS Please refer to the Kennedy School Handbook for the policy regarding birthday celebrations at school. Please note that it is not feasible to “bring in a favorite game to play,” as a means of celebrating a birthday. BOOK CLUB/SOFTWARE CLUB ORDERS Every two months, I will be sending the Scholastic book club and software club order forms home with the students. This is a wonderful way to encourage reading and build your child’s library at bargain prices! Please send in all orders with a check made out to Scholastic (we have been asked not to accept cash for any purpose). SPECIALISTS The following is a list of the class specials for the coming school year: Monday –Library Tuesday-Art Wednesday-Wellness Thursday-Music Friday—Physical Education PLEASE DON’T FORGET YOUR LIBRARY BOOKS –this is a homework assignment and students will not be given credit for having complete homework if the book is not in school. NOTICES AND UPDATES Classroom and grade level notices go home on a regular basis, in addition to weekly updates on my blog, www.theshinyredapple.blogspot.com. I update the blog frequently, and try to post as many notices as possible to my blog, so check it often. The blog is the best place to get the most up to date information about classroom happenings. CURRICULUM I offer a child-centered classroom rich in language and critical thinking. There is a strong emphasis on developing independence. My program offers a balanced approach in all academic areas focusing on independent and group projects, cooperative learning, discussion, technology, and manipulatives. All classroom opportunities will be conducive to each student’s individual learning style. Many activities are completed with the other fourth grade classes, particularly in the area of Social Studies. Students are given the opportunity to work with other fourth grade teachers in order to enrich the learning process for all. Please ask your child to share his/her experiences with you on a daily basis. We are off to a great start! I am looking forward to seeing you at Open House. Sincerely, Mrs. Williams Room 23 |
