John F. Kennedy Elementary School > 4th Grade > Welcome to Mrs. Merten's Fourth Grade Class

Meet Mrs. Merten

The Beginning

I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, forty-two years ago. I grew up right next door, in Wrentham. In Wrentham, I grew up with a view of King Philip High School, where my mom was an art teacher. My dad was a teacher, too, and then he became a principal. I can't remember a time when I didn't know that I would be a teacher. I am the second of four children. My sister, Amy is the oldest, and my two younger brothers are Paul and Bobby. I went to Wrentham Elementary School and King Philip Jr. High School.

My brothers, my sister and I are in the center of the picture.
(That's me in the red bowtie.)

I went to Bishop Feehan High School, in Attleboro, and I graduated in 1987. While I was there I was a cheerleader (this won't surprise you once you meet me).
After graduating from Feehan, I went on to Providence College in Rhode Island. That is where I met my husband, Matt. We have known each other for twenty-two years, and have been married for nineteen of those years. We love to go camping and spend time with our friends and family.

In 1994, my son, Sam, was born. He is a great kid, and enjoys playing all kinds of sports. In 1998, my daughter Grace was born. She loves to do all sorts of things, including arts and crafts and playing soccer. This year, Sam will be in eleventh grade, and Grace will be in eighth. Both of my kids love that I am a teacher, but sometimes wish I didn't know so much about what goes on at school.

My first teaching job was at Truro Central School, on Cape Cod. There were only 96 students in the whole school! I started teaching at Kennedy School in the fall of 1992. At that time, I was the only resource teacher in the building. Later, I taught fifth grade and then second grade before finding my favorite grade - fourth grade. This will be my tenth year teaching fourth grade!

I always say that Kennedy School is a wonderful place to be, if you are a student, a parent or a teacher. I love my job here, and I wouldn't trade it for another, anywhere. I have so many wonderful friends here at JFK, but my best friend here is Mrs. Williams. We love to spend time together, both in and out of school. You will find that our classes love to do things together, too!
